As of January 1, 2025, California is reinforcing its stance on workplace inclusivity with an important expansion to the CROWN Act. Originally passed to prevent discrimination based on natural hair and hairstyles, the revised law continues to push the boundaries of what a fair, inclusive workplace should look like. For employers, it’s a vital moment to review and strengthen your Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices.
The CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) was first signed into law in California in 2019. It expanded the definition of “race” under anti-discrimination laws to include traits historically associated with race, such as hair texture and protective hairstyles like locs, twists, braids, and afros.
The 2025 amendment to the CROWN Act, AB 1815, clarifies and strengthens language around hairstyle protections, emphasizing that these traits are a central part of racial identity and must not be penalized in the workplace. It’s no longer acceptable to enforce grooming standards that disproportionately impact employees based on hair texture or cultural expression.
True DEI goes beyond hiring statistics—it means fostering a workplace where individuals feel safe and respected for who they are. Outdated appearance policies can be unintentionally biased. This legal update underscores the importance of creating inclusive policies that reflect the diversity of your workforce and support equity at every level.
Employers must review and update their grooming, appearance, and dress code policies. Ensure HR and leadership teams are trained on what this law protects and how it aligns with your organization’s DEI goals. Incorporate inclusivity training and audits to prevent unconscious bias and ensure cultural competency across teams.
The CROWN Act’s 2025 update isn’t just a legal shift—it’s a powerful reminder that DEI is ongoing work. Building an inclusive workplace means recognizing and celebrating all forms of identity and expression. As California continues to lead with forward-thinking policies, employers have an opportunity to lead with empathy, understanding, and action.
